This past July, Governor Cooper signed House Bill 149, “ Students with Dyslexia and Dyscalculia” into law.

HB149 will:
1. Define dyslexia in the state education code.

>2. Ensure that the State Board of Education provide professional development “on the identification of and intervention strategies for students with dyslexia, dyscalculia, or other specific learning disabilities.”

3.Require State Board of Education to develop and make available information electronically about dyslexia, educational methodologies, screenings and what is available to support the work with children with dyslexia.

4. Require local boards of education to review the diagnostic tools and screening instruments they have available.

This bill is a step in the right direction, but will need support and the right resources to help our 1 in 5 students at risk for dyslexia and dyscalculia!
